Common toilet problems and what causes them

Recognise the symptom before a small fault becomes a bigger inconvenience.

The toilet keeps running

A constant trickle into the pan is usually caused by a worn flush seal, a fill valve that is not shutting off or an incorrectly adjusted water level. It can waste a surprising amount of water. If the toilet has an isolation valve, shutting it temporarily can stop the waste until it is repaired.

The flush is weak

A low cistern water level, partly blocked rim outlets or a faulty flush valve can reduce flushing power. Repeatedly flushing more paper rarely solves the cause and may increase the risk of a blockage.

The toilet blocks repeatedly

Toilets are designed for human waste and toilet paper. Wipes—including products labelled flushable—sanitary products, cotton wool, nappies and cleaning cloths do not break down in the same way and can lodge in the trap or pipework.

A plunger may clear a simple local obstruction. Stop flushing if the water level rises, and do not mix chemical drain cleaners because they can create a hazardous situation for anyone later working on the blockage.

Water appears around the base

This can come from the pan connector, cistern, supply valve or condensation. Clean and dry the area, then observe where fresh water first appears. Do not ignore foul-smelling water or movement in the toilet pan; the joint may need urgent attention.

The cistern is slow or noisy

A restricted or ageing fill valve can make a cistern slow to refill, whistle or vibrate. Debris in the valve or unsuitable water pressure may also contribute. A replacement fill valve is often a straightforward repair when correctly selected and adjusted.

About macerators: only waste and toilet paper should enter a macerator. Wipes and other foreign objects can damage its cutting mechanism. If it hums without clearing or repeatedly trips the electrics, stop using it and arrange a repair.

When to call a plumber

  • The water is rising or overflowing.
  • A leak cannot be isolated.
  • Blockages return after being cleared.
  • There is movement at the base of the toilet.
  • Several drains or toilets are affected at once.
